This Cherry Butter Jam Bars recipe comes from Taste of Home or Country Woman (one of those by the same publisher) from the mid-1990s, and was called Apricot Bars. The original recipe was submitted to the magazine by Jill Moritz, of Irvine, California.
I have made these dozens of times, with different flavors of jams, jellies, and butters. I used to make them for craft shows, and now make them to add to Christmas cookie trays. They’re delicious year-round!

These yummy bars are delicious year-round, but make an excellent addition to a holiday cookie tray. You can make them with any flavor jam, jelly, or fruit butter that you like!
- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Cook Time: 30-35 Minutes
- Total Time: 45-50 Minutes
- Yield: 12-18 bars
- Category: Cookies
- Method: Baking
Ingredients
3/4 Cup Softened Butter or Margarine
1 Cup Granulated Sugar
1 Large Egg
2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
1/4 Teaspoon Baking Powder
1-1/3 Cups Sweetened Coconut Flakes
1/2 Cup Chopped Walnuts
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
12 Ounces Cherry Butter
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy.
Add the egg, mixing well.
Gradually add the flour and baking powder to the butter mixture.
Stir in the coconut, walnuts, and vanilla.
Press 2/3 of the dough into a greased 13×9 pan (I like to line the bottom of the pan with parchment, but you don’t have to)
Spread the cherry butter over the bottom crust, and crumble the remaining dough over the top.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
Cool and cut into bars or squares.
I made these today and they are absolutely delectable! I didn’t have walnuts so I substituted pecans. So so yummy! They are most definitely holiday worthy.
I’m so glad you like them–and any nuts that you like/have on hand can be substituted. Pecans are my favorites!
